Inside the Lions Den hotel

Outside the Lions Den hotel

All of us at Cape Tribulation

Through the Daintree

Friday, 1st July, 2011

Here we are at Chili Beach. It’s been 5 nights since we left Cairns and from this point the trip will get interesting. So, what’s been happening in those five days?

Day One – driving to The Lion’s Den Hotel:

We are so ready to leave the caravan park and get out into the open again. Although the kids have been having a great time here, I’m starting to feel like I’m living in a zoo. The Swaggers all left the day before, and we plan on catching up to them at Endeavour Falls.

A quick stop off in Port Douglas saw Terry and Debbie reminiscing their honeymoon, and then on through Cape Tribulation. The drive along Cape Tribulation was spectacular, even Cam got caught up in the beauty of the rainforest reaching right up to the coastline and started listing descriptive words to use later in his travel diary. This is exactly what I’ve been pining for since settling in Broome, and I felt like I was being wrapped in a giant, warm hug. The downside of this drive was that the winding roads meant Dan spent most of the time in the front seat with a sick bag in his lap.

Next we took the Bloomfield Track and camped the night at The Lion’s Den Hotel. Ran into a couple of the Swaggers that had braved the CREB and they were full of bravado even after one breaking their engine mount. All part of the adventure really. (We will do the CREB on the way back – without our campers in tow.)

Along all our travels we have stopped at some fabulous little pubs that have provided the best hospitality and meals. The Lion’s Den is another that didn’t disappoint. We set up camp and went back for dinner. The pub itself is full of “stuff”. From business cards, stubby coolers, writing all over the walls – left by every traveler wanting to leave their mark at this iconic spot. We decided to just drink and eat. Steve managed to give enough cheek to the waitress that he was (good-naturedly) banned from the bar as “ having enough”. Debbie and I just sat together catching up, drinking ciders and generally being raucous.

At the time, we thought the campsite was one of the windiest sites we’ve ever experienced – but we weren’t to know then what was in store for us….

  1. Hey guys and gal. Fascinating reading about your trip so far. Nothing happening in this part of the world.Though I cant understand how you can be remotely cold! We decided to call off our golf after nine holes yesterday cause it was raining and thunder was close then as we had our last tee shots it began to hail. Only good thing about it was we got to the bar early. will have to google to check out the towns u have been to. Slow and easy.

  2. Hi!!!!!
Just reading about your adventures and dreaming of doing the same. All I have to say though, is that I can't believe you swam somewhere there was a saltie living. Haven't you learnt anything from living up north? gotta ask the locals first! Glad it dind't end up badley though. Broome is just trucking along with thousands of tourists all over the place. Had small spatter or rain the other day, but luckily nothing big that cause closures. Thats the last thing we need.
Continue having fun and I'll check in again soon xo
