The Kalpowar crossing

Deb and I pondering whether to have another or not

The Kalpowar crossing

This was meant to be another pic of Old Laura Homestead, but I downloaded the wrong one into this page and can't work out how to delete it to add the right one. Oops!

Day Three – Two night stop at Kalpowar:

Now we’re heading into Lakefield National Park, and stop at Kalpowar. We’re feeling a bit travel weary by this stage and decide to stop for two nights.

On the way, somehow, Terry’s trailer unhitched itself along the corrugations and washouts. A lot of discussion and many choice words later, Terry re-hitched and we were on our way again.

It is here that we got into our camping groove with the Frosts. By now we had had our catch up nights, gossip nights and drunken nights. Now we felt like we were actually on holiday, and it was time to get serious.

First on the agenda was a bon-fire, next came the camp oven with roast lamb and veges ready to be put in the embers. With everyone gratefully clean thanks to the power shower, the I-pod was set to shuffle and some mighty smooth sounds were soon pumping. The next night it was sirloin and scotch fillet on the Barbie plate. Mm Mm, this is what camping is all about. Terry decided to use all the firewood on the last night, and constantly reminded us “what a cracking fire” it was.

Each night, we would take the spotlights down to the crossing for a spot of croc hunting but disappointingly we never saw any. The kids wanted to go fishing while we were there, so rigged up with lures and lunch, we drove up the river a bit. After 7 snags and 7 lost lures, we were over it (so were they) and we just sat and watched the river flow. It was peacefully beautiful and a refreshing way to spend an afternoon.
