The view looking into the crater
30th July, 2009
Pulled in to Wolf Creek Crater for the night. After all the hype we couldn’t miss this opportunity. We were also told that this track had people seriously shredding multiple tyres and destroying shockies, but once again we drove on regardless. So glad we did – it was awesome! Did a hike up to the top rim of the crater and it was so windy we seriously had to hold on to Dan or he would have blown away. The view was superb.
There was a bunch of young lads camped nearby, breaking every rule possible. Music was blaring, they had stocked enough firewood for a bonfire to last the whole night. They were loud and judging by the rum bottle being passed around about to have a REALLY GOOD NIGHT. Steve decided to go over for a “friendly” meet and greet. Turned out to be a great bunch of young lads and one girl who are working their way around the country and had just thrown in their jobs at Fitzroy Crossing and were traveling to the next town for new work. They had no tent or sleeping bags – just a blanket each. The girl was going to sleep in the car, and the boys had a great idea to sleep on top of the water tank. At least their consumption of rum would have dulled the pain if they rolled off. They were hoping the Rangers wouldn’t come around about the fire as they had no way of cooking their dinner without a fire. Oh – to be young again! True to their word though, they did turn everything down once our boys had gone to bed. Either that or they all passed out.
