Flock of corellas along the Plenty Highway Fossicking for gems at Garnet Gully

23rd July, 2009
Followed the Plenty Hwy to a campsite called Gemtree. What a neat place. The campsites are so far apart from each other, you can have a campfire, the generator shuts off at 10:00pm – bliss. Really, really pretty.

We paid $10.00 for the opportunity to go to the ground’s Garnet Gully, where the boys both filled a bucket with sand, and then go and sift through it for gems. Although nothing found is of “gem” quality, Cam in particular was so excited as his booty of rocks grew to include garnets, crystals and various ores that he found himself. He puts this down to one of the best highlights of the trip so far.

Although we could only stay the one night this time, we will head back there after Dan’s birthday and do a proper fossicking tour. This one will be more for the adults and hopefully I’ll find some garnets worth setting into jewellery.
