Blanche Cup
The hot spring Bath Tub
Alberrie Creek
30th May, 2009
We pulled out of Marree and followed the Oodnadatta Track up to Coward Springs. The signs said it all “You are now entering remote territory!” The drive was easy taking us past Alberrie Creek which has all these crazy sculptures on the side of the road. Someone even made up a somewhat human skeleton using old cow, horse or camel bones. Heaps of photo opportunities here. The Old Ghan line lies faithfully to our left as we continue our way north.

Along the way, we stopped off at Blanche’s Teacup and The Bubbler, which are two natural springs supporting plant and animal life found nowhere else on earth. It was absolutely FREEZING which meant we didn’t stick around for long, but the landscape was beautiful and we did get to see a few creatures.

We arrived at Coward Springs and met up with Cathy and Evan, about two hours later John and Kaye turned up. Then another couple (Daniel, Melissa and their daughter Georgia) we all met in Leigh Creek arrived. It’s strange – we are seeing more of these “traveling friends” than we did of our long time friends back home. We are enjoying the convoy, and sharing a fire is always more fun.

Coward Springs is definitely the oasis in the middle of nowhere, including palm trees. The spring itself is exactly like the pictures in the books, but too cold for me. Cameron went in for about one and a half hours although he was purple by the time he came out. Needless to say, he was the cleanest in the family that night.

Around the fire that night, Steve mentioned we were traveling to Halligan’s Bay in the morning – which is the road that takes you down to the water’s edge of Lake Eyre. Within seconds, everyone was in and we looked forward to the convoy of four cars down to the Lake. Ooh, the anticipation….
