Bradshaw Art Mitchell Falls - it's amazing that nothing is fenced off. You can stand right on the edge of the drops.

16th and 17th August, 2009
What a trip into the Mitchell Falls! The 101 kms on Kalumburu Road was great thanks to our new friend the grader driver. Then you turn left and travel for 71 kms to the Mitchell Falls camp ground. It took us two and a half hours to drive it. The corrugations and ruts were relentless AGAIN. The campground was split into Generator Camping and Quiet Camping. There was only one other camper set up in the Generator area, so we set up there (also the fact that someone had left a huge pile of firewood there was also helpful) No generators in sight and only one other camper – we picked a beauty.

We surprised the boys with a 12 minute helicopter flight up to the falls. They were absolutely beside themselves with excitement. It also meant we only had to hike the 4 kms one way. It was a great way to do it as the temperature was stinking hot, and they managed to bitch and whine all the way back to camp. In hindsight, we should have hiked there and had the helicopter pick us up, but there you go. On the hike back we saw the controversial Bradshaw Art which is a real bonus.

The power shower came in real handy each night too. At bedtime, we all layed down and looked at the stars through the open windows on the camper. I will miss these skies for a long time. Although the water wasn't torrenting over the falls, this trip is well worth the effort. This is the place that you get a true sense of the size and remoteness of the Kimberley.
