Here we are at the Coongie Lakes. It’s beautiful. Our campsite is right on the lake front with sandy beach and dunes for the kids to play in. Cam and Dan are in their element. They are straight out of the tent and start playing in the sand. They’ve spent all their time making sand balls which has just resulted in a huge ball fight between them and Steve. Not sure who won, but Steve and Cam ended up in the lake for a refreshing dip. We are camping with Allan and Roslyn whom we met in Cameron Corner. They are great company. Taking a drive today found out there is not that much to see, and that this is the kind of place you come to to do nothing else but chill out. Cam did the whole drive standing on the side sills, even through the water crossings – he was stoked. These are the things we did as kids, and it’s great that Cam is having this same opportunity. After the drive we had a liquid lunch by camp with Allan and Ros, so I guess you could say we are “chilling out”.
We have a resident pelican that calmly patrols our shore at regular intervals each day, and a local dingo that scours our campsite each day. Cam got out of the tent this morning to come face to face with it – he was really excited and spooked at the same time. This has been a really refreshing stop for us – peaceful and fun. Cam and I even spent a lot of time getting up to date on his schoolwork.
All day is spent fighting off the flies – we are so glad for the fly nets we bought to wear over our hats. When night time comes it’s a different story. Then come the killer moths and mossies by the droves. We took a photo of the roof of our annex one night and I swear there were more than a hundred mossies milling around up there looking for a free feed. At about 7:00pm we all go inside the tent and play card/board games until bedtime. It’s always an early night, but good family time.
Since we are staying for four nights, we bought the camp shower out. That was a welcome luxury. Living in this sand has made our skin so dry, it was great to be clean and moisturized for a change. Also, this is the first time we have set up the camp toilet – which is working a treat. The boys love it. It’s not often you get to sit on the loo looking out over a beautiful lake. Doesn’t feel like we’re roughing it at all.
Tomorrow we will pack up and start traveling back to civilization and prepare ourselves for the trepidation of the Simpson Desert. We are hearing a lot of differing stories about traveling the Simpson from East to West, and traveling with a trailer, but I’m sure Steve can get us through. If not, at least he’ll have a reason to lie awake every night!!!

Hi Guys. Wow thats a lot of mossies!!!! Love your photos, it looks so pretty. How long will it take you guys to cross the desert? By the way is it really camping if you have a shower and a toilet????haha Bloody cold here, snow on the port hills. Nothing interesting to report, the girls are sharing a room at the moment and i can't stress enough what a bad idea that was... Say hi to Cam and Dan from me. Love you all lots. Love Ang xxx
